As your group facilitator I will help you examine your “emotional immune system” made up of behaviors that on the surface appear to be self-defeating, so that you will grow to understand the adaptive imperative we all have to create behaviors that keep us safe from emotional pain.  When we “commit” to these misnamed “self-defeating” behaviors we do not have to face of our deepest doubts and darkest fears.

Sugar Makes You Fat

Sugar makes you fat.

Sugar is not just hidden in your food.  Sugar IS your food.  Sugar is breads, pastas, dairy, root vegetables, fruits, nuts, soft drinks, fruit juices, sport drinks, cakes, candies, cookies as well as all the hidden sugar in the processed foods you eat.  Sugar is crackers. Sugar is cheese.  Sugar is yogurt.  Sugar is what makes you fat.

Sugar is carbohydrate and simply said we eat too much “sugar” on a daily basis.  It is sugar that makes you fat.  We operate off our “checking account”, the sugar we take in each day and the sugar reserves in our muscles and we are unable to burn the fat kept in our “savings account” even with exercise because it is locked away.  We cannot burn fat until we decrease our sugar intake.

When we decrease our sugar intake we run the risk of cannibalizing our own protein.  In order to access the fat stores on our body for fuel we must first decrease the sugar we consume and take in adequate protein to spare our body’s own protein (muscles, for example).  Only then can we use fat for fuel.  Once we establish this temporary unbalanced stated called “ketosis” our bodies will, without effort, run like green machines off the recalcitrant fat stored all over our bodies.

Cut back on sugar, increase your protein to an adequate level and you will lose the fat.

Weight Loss: Calories In vs. Calories Out, an Incomplete Theory

It has helped me to take a fresh perspective and understand more fully that my notion of calories in vs. calories out was incomplete.

I realize now that I need to understand the effect of carbohydrates on my insulin level.

My insulin level, when eating too many carbohydrates, triggers a cycle that quickly spirals out of control and leads to obesity in no time.

I think this is what people mean when they say, “I’m addicted to food” or “I’m addicted to carbohydrates.”  It’s physiological and it’s fixable.

Weight Loss & The Holidays

I was worried about committing to a weight-loss protocol over the holiday season. My first thought was… I’ll wait until after the holidays so I can enjoy the food and not worry about sticking to a diet. Sounds reasonable enough. Then into my life popped 5 clients who all said they were ready NOW and they committed to start the protocol BEFORE the holidays. What a concept!

I admit, I was resistant but with a little nudge from something deep inside me that really, really wants to be slim and healthy I spoke the words I needed to say. I am going to do it too. And here I am, already on my path to health, weighing five pounds less and feeling energized. I put on a pair of jeans today that I can button without holding my breath. I looked down at my thighs and noticed they looked a bit less thick. I gazed in the mirror to see a face just a less puffy. The inflammation caused by my previously poor eating has diminished. My joints move more easily and without pain. It’s only been a week and I feel so much better.

Here’s my wish to you for this holiday season. Start today. Say those challenging few words that will help you bridge the gap between great health and energy or starting the new year off feeling discouraged, fatigued and with perhaps an additional 5-10 pounds to shed.
